Xiph QuickTime Components 0.1.7

A new XiphQT release is finally out!

The version number is 0.1.7 and while it has the property of being strictly greater than the previous version number, which was 0.1.5, it doesn’t really reflect the state of the project. I should probably annotate the version number with something like “pronounce: oh-seven-one” ;) No worries, other Xiph projects seem to have problems with version numbering, too. And I’ll just number the next release, which should be ready in much less than 11 months, with 0.8, or maybe even higher, we’ll see…

The release notes highlight the changes quite nicely. And I’ve already received some feedback on improved performance, something I wasn’t sure would be really noticeable. Overall, seems to be quite a reasonable release, definitely worth upgrading - get it if you haven’t done that yet.

    Thanks for the codec. It works beautifully with Ogg. But I am unable to hear some FLAC files: “File … cannot be imported: this is not a valid imported file” (translated from French).

    Known issue? :-/

    Would be nice to include aoTuV [1] patch to libvorbis. aoTuV is an improved libvorbis encoder, that, while keeping ABI compatibility, gives many improvement:
    * better quality at all bitrates versus libvorbis-1.1.2 [2], giving aoTuV better quality than other codec (AAC, MP3, MPC, WMA, …) [3];
    * support of quality down to -2 (32kb/s at 44kHz stereo), versus -1 (45kb/s at 44kHz stereo) of libvorbis-1.1.x;
    * encoding speed 10% better thanks to the included Vorbis-OptSort patch (improve ordering loop);

    aoTuV beta 5 is the last version. aoTuV Release 1 is the stable version, and it’s the same of beta4.51, renamed after a lot of testing of the audio community (especially on hydrogenaudio forum [4]) and this is the reccomended vorbis encoder [5].

    I can’t play .flac files in quicktime 7, is this a known issue ?

    Downloaded it to get .flac files directly into iTunes 7. Won’t do it nor will QT7 play .flac files with the component installed. I see on the iTunes forum a lot of people would love this to work.

    Thanks for all your efforts.
